            Director General of Police (DGP) [Law and Order] Mr. Hardeep Singh Dhillon today envisioned that the good work by lady officers/ officials in the Police department would become the trend setter for enhancing their participation in the force both at the national and the state level.

            Addressing the gathering after inaugurating Zonal Conference for Role of Women in Police and Attitudinal Shift here today, the DGP said that it was heartening to see that a number of girls have joined the force as officers/ officials. However, he said that the number was still meager and need to be enhanced at the level of advanced countries where the females were about 25% of the Police force. Mr. Dhillon said that this was all the more important for implementing the Community Policing Model in the state.

            The DGP said that though in British era the Police was a brutal arm of the Raj but nowadays there was a paradigm shift in as Police was now seen in a new role of friend. He said that now the time has come when the Police must be seen as a force representing every strata of society. Mr. Dhillon said that for it adequate representation to the females was all the more important as Policing today was not only confined to masculine jobs but as a matter of fact 99% duties of the Police force during the peace time were involved in collection of evidence, recording statements and others.

            The DGP said that for this duty no force was required but the officers/ officials must be fully equipped in communicative skills. He said that female officers could be an asset for the force as they were blessed with sensitive and articulate persuasion. Moreover, Mr. Dhillon said that the victims of heinous crimes like Rape, Juvenile cases, domestic violence and others were more comfortable with the lady officers.

The DGP said that female officers/ officials were more responsible to safeguard the interests of the general public and to perform their duty well. He said that the women officers/ officials were a great asset for the Police force as they could easily bridge the gap between the Police and the public. Complementing the female officers/ officials for joining the Police force, Mr. Dhillon said that by capturing almost all the areas which were hitherto fiefdom of males, the females have proved that they could do anything.  

Asserting that the young female officers/ officials were already empowered, the DGP advised them that it was the time for them to perform. He said that the young officers/ officials have to be overcome the reluctance on part of their, family, friends, society and peer group for conducting the duty besides exhibiting proper discipline to uphold the glorious tradition of the Police force. Mr. Dhillon called upon the female officers/ officials that time has come when they must come forward and prove the world that they could perform their duty efficaciously by striking a fine balance between their job and family.

Earlier, welcoming all the officers/ officials in the conference, the Commissioner of Police Jalandhar Mr. Praveen Kumar Sinha hailed the initiative of Director General of Police Mr. Suresh Arora to hold such conferences. He said that such workshops were need of hour to enhance the ratio of women in the Police force. Mr. Sinha said that currently women comprises of only six percent of Police force in state whereas 94% were males.

The Commissioner said that workable echo system for the females must be created in the Police force. He said that such workshops would go a long way in providing a common platform for chalking out a strategy to ensure maximum participation of the women in the force.

In her address key note speaker for the workshop Mrs. Rajesh Gill said that it was heartening to know that women were excelling in the fields that were hitherto considered male’s fiefdom. She said that girls could achieve the desired goals as they have determination and will power to do anything. Mrs. Gill advised the young female officers/ officials to strike a fine balance between their family and workplace, ensure mutual respect at workplace and remain cautious while performing their duty.
