The Jail Minister, Punjab, S. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa held a meeting with the prominent industrialists of city engaged in manufacturing sports goods with an aim to provide employment to the inmates housed in the jails throughout the state. The minister called upon the industrialists to hire the services of the inmates as per the latter's expertise to manufacture sports goods. This would serve the two fold purpose of the meeting of required human resources need of the sports industry and provide employment to the inmates.

In a press communique after the meeting, S. Randhawa said that the meeting was held with a view to transform the jails as skill development centres and providing employment avenues to inmates. He said that the jails are called 'Reform Homes' to afford a chance to the inmates to reform themselves. He further said that there is a need to generate employment avenues to make the inmates choose constructive path in life. This would lead to inmates engaging in the work with a happy frame of mindset because they would get their due amount after their release.

Divulging more, the jail minister said that during the course of meeting he proposed that the inmates should be engaged in the vocation of making sports goods in accordance with their expertise. The work would include making footballs, handballs, basketballs, rugby balls, volleyballs, bats, hockey's, strings of the tennis, squash & badminton racquets.

Appreciating the enterprise of the Jail Minister, the industrialists were of the view that this would be a one of its kind initiative which would boost the development of sports industry as well as channelizing the energy of the inmates in a positive direction.

On the occasion, among the industrialists engaged in producing sports goods were included Mr. Amit from Spartan, Mr. Rai Nandan from Nandan Exports, Mr. Ajay Sharma from Drish Shoes, Mr. Nitin Kohli from Tracer, Mr. Raju Julka from Julka Sports, Mr. Abhishek Vij and Mr. Amit Bajaj from Sheetal Fibres, Deepak Chawla from JD leather, Mr. Inderpreet Narula from Narula Sports and Mr. Vishal Gupta from Soccer International.
