DC rushes to Phillaur for overseeing arrangements in flood prone areas

In wake of looming threat of foods due to spate in river Satluj, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma today said that Army and Border Security Force has been kept on high alert.
The Deputy Commissioner, who visited the flood prone area in Phillaur Sub Division today evening , said that due to flow of water of rivulets Sarsa, Siswan and Savaan, the water level in river Satluj has enhanced , which could pose danger to low lying areas along the river in district. He said that the Army and BSF authorities have been alarmed of the situation and they have assured fulsome support and cooperation to district administration in case the need arises. Mr Sharma said that he was personally in touch with the high ups in Army and BSF to deal with sort of situation.
The Deputy Commissioner said that due to excessive release of water from Ropar safe evacuation of people and cattle from low lying areas was necessary. He said that the excessive water has been released from the swollen Satluj river and was expected to touch Jalandhar today night. Mr. Sharma said that the district administration was keeping a close watch on the entire situation adding that they were already fully geared up to face any unforeseen eventuality arising out of the prevailing circumstances.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the Sub Divisional Magistrates of Phillaur, Nakodar and Shahkot have been put on high alert and they have been directed to coordinate and oversee the evacuation operations of people residing in low lying areas. Mr. Sharma said that the SDMs have also been entrusted with the task to identify safer places in the district for movement of people to them in case required. Mr Sharma said that arrangements for dry fodder for animals have been made and if need arises the mandis would be converted into relief centres.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the Health department has been asked to keep its Health teams ready adding that Powercom has been instructed to gear up for supplying power in proposed relief centres, if the need arises. Similarly, Mr Sharma said that divers have been put on alert so that they could be roped in if needed adding that no stone would be left unturned for extending a helping hand to people in case of any problem.
However, the Deputy Commissioner appealed the people that there was no need to panic as the district administration was fully at their disposal. He said that the district administration was duty-bound to extend a helping hand to these people, in case of any sort of emergency. Mr. Sharma said that he along with top brass of the district administration were keeping a regular tab on the events unfolding due to the heavy rainfall in state.
On the occasion Additional Deputy Commissioner Mr Jasbir Singh, Sub Divisional Magistrate Mr Varinder Pal Singh Bajwa, Tehsildar Mr Tapan Bhanot and others were also present.
