The government drug de-addiction centers in the district were emerging as a ray of hope for drug addicts and their families to get out of ‘trap’ of this scourge as the two centres at Jalandhar and Nurmahal have witnessed footfall of around six new drug addicts daily, who visit these centers for treatment.

In its reformatory approach the state government had set up these two centers at Jalandhar Civil Hospital and Community Health Center Nurmahal with 50 and 20 bed capacity each respectively. In last four months from March to June more than 3000 patients have availed treatment from these centers. As per the details, the drug de-addiction center at local Civil Hospital has registered 572 new OPDs of the patients whereas 1734 Old OPD were given treatment and 352 patients were given indoor treatment. Likewise, in CHC Nurmahal 167 New OPDs were registered and 593 old OPDs were also treated besides treatment to 63 indoor patients.

The Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma said that surge in drug addicts coming for treatment in these de-addiction centers reflect their eagerness to shun this curse, which was ruining the youth of the state. He said that due to the proactive resolve of the Captain Amarinder Singh led state government a massive increase has been witnessed in arrests of drug peddlers and seizures of drugs. Mr. Sharma pointed out that massive crackdown on drug peddlers coupled with large scale awareness programs by the state government has brought awakening amongst the people as a result of which the people were shunning the stigma attached with drug addiction and were freely coming to the centers for treatment of their loved ones.

The Deputy Commissioner said that it was an encouraging trend but the district administration would continue its efforts until the entire district was not made drug free. He said that these centers were the result of commitment of the state government to wean away this menace from the state through proper treatment and diagnosis of the drug addicts. Mr. Sharma said that besides these two centers, Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) were also operational in Jalandhar, Phillaur and Nakodar where outdoor health care services were being imparted to the patients suffering from drug addiction.

Meanwhile, Civil Surgeon Dr. Jaspreet Kaur Sekhon said that the Health department along with the district administration would making strenuous efforts to make district a completely drug free and healthy district. She said that a team of committed Doctors like Dr Nirdosh Goel, Dr Sanjay Khanna, Dr Sanjiv Lochan, Dr. Aman Sood, Dr Mahesh Prabhakar, Dr Maninder and Dr Vishal along with their staff were already working zealously to ensure that the menace of drugs was completely eliminated from the district.
